Black Snow Eurorack Modular Jam

December 2nd, 2024

On Black Friday 2024 Erie Pennsylvania, my home town, got a record breaking 22 inches of snowfall in 24 hours. Aside from shoveling the drive way four times a day, there's not much to do except record the modular and go for a long snowshoe.

I'm experimenting with stereo delay by using a dual VCA to rapidly pan the output of a single delay module left and right. Not a true stereo delay, but still sounds incredible. The bass hits are no more than a Kick Drum sent through a resonant low-pass filter before the delay is added.

Do me a favor and don't listen to this without a good pair of headphones or a sizable subwoofer. Other than a few cowbells and hi-hats the audio is super low-frequency, no chance your phone speakers will pass these oscillations.

I recorded the audio before heading out for a snowshoe so I had some idea of the tone in video I wanted to achieve. The initial intention was not to build a short horror film but it evolved in that direction. Everything is shot in first person on a Hero 10, you never see the main character, signs of life or in-tact structures. There is an element of our character traveling through a dystopian winter storm, getting lost in a dark forest, and perishing in the "black snow" which is either an icy creek or a mysterious void in the Earth.
